How to make an AI birthday video from a photo
Short answer: to make an AI birthday video from a photo, upload a clear photo of the birthday person to an image-to-video model and describe one warm action, such as "she smiles, blows out the candles and laughs". In Dora that takes a few minutes: choose a model that accepts photos, write the prompt, pick a vertical shape and generate a 4 to 6 second clip.
Birthday guides from other tools follow the same recipe: pick photos with personal meaning, animate them with moderate motion, then add a message and music (Morphic, Dreamina). Here it is with Dora's real controls, plus a way to make the photo say happy birthday in your own voice.
Step 1: Choose the photo
- Use a sharp, front-facing photo with even light and the whole face visible.
- One person is the safest start. Groups give the model more faces to get wrong.
- Pick a photo with a bit of room around the person if you want a wave or a hug; a tight close-up can only smile or blink.
- A scan of an old print works too. If it is faded, clean it first with the steps in how to restore and animate old photos.
Step 2: Decide what the clip does
- A smile and a wave: the simplest and the most natural.
- Blowing out candles: a birthday cake in the photo helps; otherwise describe it.
- A speaking or singing greeting: use Lip Sync (step 4).
- Birthday scene: the same person at a party with balloons. Same Character takes up to 7 photos of one person and places them in any scene you describe.
- A pet's birthday: see how to make an AI video of your pet.
Step 3: Make the video in Dora
- Open the create page and switch to video.
- Pick a model that accepts a photo. Seedance 2 Mini, Kling 3.0 Turbo, Kling Omni and Gemini Omni all do. The models page shows each one's cost in coins before you spend anything.
- Upload the photo.
- Write the prompt: subject, one action, mood and camera (examples below).
- Choose 9:16 for Stories, Reels and messaging apps, or another shape if you need it.
- Keep it to 4 to 6 seconds, then generate. The clip lands in your gallery, where you can download it.
Step 4: Make the photo say happy birthday
On the web app, Lip Sync animates a face from a still photo plus an audio track, so the mouth follows your recording. The audio must be 15 seconds or shorter, which fits a greeting.
- Record a short message on your phone: "Happy birthday, Mum! Sorry I can't be there, big hug."
- In Dora's web app choose Lip Sync, upload the photo and the audio.
- Pick 9:16, 16:9 or 1:1 and 480p or 720p, and generate.
You can also record yourself singing one line. For a longer greeting, make several clips and join them in your phone's editor. More on the options in how to make a talking AI avatar.
Birthday prompts to copy
- Smile and wave: "The woman in the photo smiles warmly and waves at the camera, soft indoor light, slight push-in. Keep her face the same."
- Candles: "He leans in and blows out the candles on the cake, smoke rises, he laughs, warm light, static camera."
- Balloons: "Colorful balloons drift upward behind her as she looks up and smiles, gentle handheld camera."
- Party scene (Same Character): "The same person laughs at a table with a birthday cake and friends clapping, warm evening light, slow tracking shot."
- Pet: "The dog sits wearing a small party hat and wags its tail, confetti falls, static camera."
Say what must stay: "keep the face and the background the same".
Make it look better
- One action per clip. Waving, blowing candles and laughing in four seconds will blur together. Make three clips.
- Gentle motion. Morphic warns that very heavy motion can distort faces, and in our experience subtle movement reads as more real.
- Try two models with the same photo and keep the better take.
- Add a song or voice in your editor; Dora makes the visuals, not the final cut.
- Check the face against the original photo before you send it.
What can go wrong
- Faces drift. The more the prompt changes, the more the face can change. Shorten the clip or simplify the action.
- Candles and cakes. Small objects and any lettering on a cake are weak spots. Do not rely on a readable "Happy Birthday" in the picture.
- Lip Sync needs a clear face. A turned head or a hand over the mouth gives poor results.
- Consent. Only use photos of people who agree, and be careful with photos of people who have died; some relatives find it moving, others upsetting.
- Labels. If you post publicly, TikTok asks creators to label AI-generated content that shows realistic-looking people (TikTok Community Guidelines).
Other tools for birthday videos
Dora is a general generator with no birthday template pack. If you want a guided look, these are worth trying:
- Morphic describes animating several photos, adding a message and a song, and cutting them into a montage (guide).
- Dreamina (CapCut) has an AI birthday video maker where you upload a photo and write a prompt.
- insMind offers ready-made birthday templates.
Where Dora is different: you choose from several video models, you write the prompt, and the cost in coins is shown before each generation. Where template tools are better: a finished look with music and no prompt writing.
