1. HeyGen

Its listing says you record one short clip and it builds an avatar with your face and voice, then delivers whatever script you type. Plans include Starter at $10 a month and Creator at $29 a month. It suits agents, founders and explainers. You must film yourself once.

2. D-ID

D-ID creates videos of digital people from a single image, per its listing. Plans listed include Lite from $5.90 a month and Pro from $29 a month. English interface only.

3. Dora

Dora is a general AI video generator. Its talking tool is Lip Sync, on the web app at doravideo.com, which runs in Safari on your iPhone: one photo plus one audio file, up to 15 seconds. It does not clone your voice or build a reusable avatar from a clip. There is no free tier: it uses coins from a plan (pricing). The iPhone app makes the other kinds of video.

4. Avatarify

Made for fun: its listing covers talking, singing and lip-sync from a photo, with memes and clips for friends. Paid plans start at $2.49 a week on its page. Not meant for presenters.

5. Revive

Revive from Reface makes pictures talk or sing among many other face effects. Weekly plans run from $3.49 to $4.99. Choose it if an avatar is only one of the things you want to try.

Before you make one

  • Only make an avatar of yourself or someone who agreed.
  • Say that a video is AI when people could take it as real.
  • Use a sharp, front-facing, well-lit photo or clip.
